From September 29th, 2017 to January 7th, 2018, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) hosted a captivating exhibition called “Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters.” This unique showcase provided visitors with an intimate glimpse into the imaginative mind of renowned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and I was fortunate to be able to experience the exhibit on opening day!

Who is Guillermo del Toro?

Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer who has made a significant impact on the world of cinema. With his distinctive style and a penchant for blending genres, del Toro has created a diverse range of films that have garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following. Some of his notable works include “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy,” and “The Shape of Water,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2018.

The “At Home with Monsters” Exhibit

The “At Home with Monsters” exhibit offered visitors a rare opportunity to explore the creative process and inspirations behind del Toro’s extraordinary body of work. The exhibition showcased a vast collection of artifacts, including original drawings, paintings, film props, and costumes, which provided a fascinating insight into the filmmaker’s unique vision.

One of the highlights of the exhibit was del Toro’s personal collection of artwork, literature, and memorabilia, which he affectionately refers to as his “Bleak House.” This extensive collection encompasses a wide range of genres, including horror, fantasy, and science fiction, reflecting del Toro’s lifelong fascination with the macabre and the fantastical.

The exhibition was divided into several thematic sections, each offering a deeper understanding of del Toro’s creative process. From exploring his early influences to showcasing the intricate design of his creatures and monsters, the exhibit took visitors on a journey through the filmmaker’s vivid imagination.

Additionally, the exhibit featured interactive elements, allowing visitors to engage with del Toro’s work in a more immersive manner. From virtual reality experiences to hands-on activities, the AGO ensured that visitors could fully immerse themselves in the fantastical worlds created by del Toro.

Furthermore, the “At Home with Monsters” exhibit served as a celebration of the art of storytelling. Del Toro’s films often delve into themes of otherness, empathy, and the human condition, and this exhibition aimed to highlight the power of storytelling as a means of connecting with others and exploring our shared humanity.

The “Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters” exhibit at the AGO was a captivating journey into the mind of one of the most visionary filmmakers of our time. Through a carefully curated collection of artifacts and interactive experiences, visitors were able to gain a deeper appreciation for del Toro’s unique blend of horror, fantasy, and human emotion.

By exploring the inspirations and creative process behind del Toro’s work, the exhibition not only showcased the filmmaker’s immense talent but also emphasized the power of storytelling in connecting with audiences on a profound level.

Whether you are a fan of del Toro’s films or simply intrigued by the world of fantasy and imagination, the “At Home with Monsters” exhibit provided an unforgettable experience that left visitors inspired and in awe of the limitless possibilities of storytelling.
