One of the many things I love about living in Toronto is the incredible diversity that the city offers. From its people to its cultures, and now even in its art, Toronto truly has it all. Recently, I had the pleasure of joining my friend Jen and together we experienced the much-lauded Mystical Landscapes exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), a temporary exhibit that has captivated the Toronto community.
The AGO is renowned for showcasing world-class art exhibitions, and Mystical Landscapes was no exception. Originally scheduled to end on January 29, 2017, the exhibition was so popular that it was extended before being shipped off to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. This collaboration between the AGO and the Musée d’Orsay brought together masterpieces from internationally acclaimed artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Edvard Munch, as well as several Canadian artists including Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, and Emily Carr.
The Mystical Landscapes exhibit delves into the realm of mysticism and the search for spirituality in our increasingly cold and troubled modern world. It explores the belief that something much bigger than ourselves still exists, and invites viewers to contemplate the profound beauty and significance of the natural world.
A Journey into the Mystical
I was fortunate enough to visit the exhibit on its final day, accompanied by my wonderful friend Jenny. From the moment we stepped into the gallery, we were transported into a world of magic and wonder. The collection of paintings was nothing short of spectacular.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was Van Gogh’s “Starry Night Over the Rhone.” Standing in front of this iconic piece, I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the swirling stars and the shimmering reflections on the water. It was as if I could feel the energy and emotion that Van Gogh poured into his work.
Another standout was Emily Carr’s “Sky.” Carr’s use of vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes perfectly captured the awe-inspiring beauty of the Canadian landscape. Standing before this painting, I felt a deep connection to the natural world and a sense of tranquility wash over me.
Monet’s “Water Lilies” was yet another masterpiece that left me in awe. The delicate brushwork and the play of light and color created a sense of serenity and harmony. It was as if I could almost hear the gentle rustle of the water lilies as they swayed in the breeze.
Appreciating the Art
Words cannot fully express the impact that these paintings had on me. The Mystical Landscapes exhibit provided a unique opportunity to experience these iconic works up close, allowing me to appreciate the intricate details and the emotions they evoke.
If you missed the exhibit, don’t worry! The AGO has released an exclusive video featuring Dr. Katharine Lochnan, the curator of the exhibition. In this video, Dr. Lochnan provides an in-depth look at the artworks and shares her insights into the mystical themes explored by the artists.
Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply appreciate the beauty of the natural world, the Mystical Landscapes exhibit is a must-see. It offers a glimpse into the minds of some of the greatest artists of all time and invites us to reflect on our place in the universe.
As Maurice Denis, a French artist, once said, “It is in one’s soul that one must find the true landscapes.” The Mystical Landscapes exhibition allows us to embark on a journey of self-discovery and connect with the profound beauty that surrounds us.
